Manage Them Yourself.

With dropping ad revenues across platforms it is in your best interest to build your own websites for your domains and place ads without giving a cut to the parking programs. Most domainers, especially those who have hundreds or thousands of domain names, can typically break them out into categories. In other words, you don't have a thousand domains with all being based upon different things. Chances are you have 15, 20, 50, or more domains you can lump into a specific niche or category.

Yes, parking companies will allow you classify which domains go into a selective group of pre-templatized categories, and most do not give you the flexibility to adjust your content, tags, ads, and backlinks. Good luck building in a good backlinking program too, as you will find most webmasters won't even take a second look at your domain if it is obviously parked.

Bottom line, do it yourself. Or have a developer create a simple content management system for you. You can even replicate the system to manage multiple niches or categories relevant to your domain names. If a developer tries to charge you an arm and leg for it, come talk to me. We may be able to put together a smoking deal which will ultimately make you much more money - because you will be getting all your ad dollars, not sharing with the parking programs.

For example, we are currently putting together a management system for our geo-wifi related domain names. We have hundreds of these domains and with in the next couple days we will have customized pages based upon the WiFi.com template; custom content, hotspots map integration, advertisements, custom titles, descriptions, tags, and much more.

Examples: wifimumbai.com, wifiparis.com, michiganwifi.com, montanawifi.com, hollywoodwifi.com, the list goes on.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://salientproperties.blogspot.com/2009/01/why-park-your-domains-manage-them.html' title='Why Park Your Domains? I would like you to share your feelings on the subject.

I see the term Category Killer and/or Category-defining used frequently and I am not sure everybody gets it or is on the same page. The same can be said about using the term “generic” to describe a domain name. Furthermore, just how big is the scale when determining a domain name to be “premium?” Here is what I feel…

In general terms and defined in Wikipedia: Category killer is a term used in marketing and strategic management to describe a product, service, brand, or company that has such a distinct sustainable competitive advantage that competing firms find it almost impossible to operate profitably in that industry. The existence of a category killer will eliminate almost all market entities, whether real or virtual. Many existing firms will leave the industry, thereby increasing the industry's concentration ratio.

One example used in Wikipedia is eBay. However, eBay is not a good example as it relates to the domain industry. Why? Because eBay is an established brand which was built with gobs of money. The word eBay (which is not really a word), in itself, does not directly reflect what business the company operates – online consumer auction house. However, eBay is a category killer because it virtually owns the online auction market. What eBay is not, a category-defining domain name.

A category-defining domain name in the online auction space would be Auction.com – because it describes exactly what type of business is likely to be operating there. The domain name itself is not necessarily a category killer. However, the chances of a category-defining domain name of becoming a category killer are greater than if one tries to corner the market with something like OnlineAuctionsbyMike.com. In other words, if you spend the same amount of money, the category-defining domain name is more likely to succeed.

Now as far as generic domain names go, and this is what I am asking for when inquiring about yours; a generic domain name is one word with meaning. Some may argue for two words, but in my opinion those are called “premium” domain names.

Some examples of generic domain names; some.com, examples.com, of.com, this.com, or.com, that.com.

Premium domain names start at the top of the scale and end in one of two places: 1) high traffic, with a consideration for quality, or 2) short, keyword rich domains. For example; a category-defining domain name is premium. A generic domain name is premium. A domain with steady convertible traffic is premium – This number may vary depending on the quality of traffic, but on the low end I would expect 100 unique visitors per day. Lastly, keyword-rich domains which are not three, four, five, and more words long. There are some good examples in the geo-domain sector; ChicagoDoctors.com, FloridaOrganics.com, etc. What must be taken into account is the quality of the keywords as it relates to conversion (ROI). Furthermore, how much can I expect to spend to draw in good traffic? (Development)

It will be debated, but in my opinion this is how I perceive the differences between category killer, category-defining, generic, and premium domains.

Fraud.net & Scams.net – Premium Generic Topic-related Pair + Swindled.net

A fellow domain name investor and I have decided to team up on this sale. Considering these would be much more valuable to an end user as a pair, I reached out and asked if he would be interested in teaming up and selling these domains cooperatively.

Within a week I drafted up a a simple contract outlining the cut for us and how the transaction will be executed. I also drafted a sale post for domain name forums and blogs. We signed the contract yesterday and the posting went live yesterday afternoon. From there, check out the "Enhance 404 Pages" link. Google has created a widget for webmasters to add to their custom 404 pages.

What is so great about this widget?
Well, as many of you may know, the majority of visitors who encounter 404 pages leave your site. A custom 404 page with the Google widget offers the following: 1) A closest match to the page - assuming one mistyped the actual page and 404'd, this widget will offer a potential actual page offered by the site. 2) It offers other links on the site. 3) It offers a search box to access other pages on the site.

Get this widget and keep more of your visitors at your site!

Domain Development Learning from BuildsOut.com

Creating a useful space on the web for your visitors can be a very tedious activity. Since entering the domain space in 2004, I had an eye on development but had novice skills. So, I started by flipping domains, scouring droplists in hopes of snapping up a really good domain to develop. All the while banking so-so domains with the thought of building them out through solid SEO and a little SEM to get the sites jump started.

Fast forward to July 2006. I purchased WiFi.com and put together a small team to help me develop it into a wireless Internet portal. It was hard work, but it paid off within the first few months as I started to benefit from relationships I had built within the WiFi industry. To top it off, I had one thing alot of other domains do not...Traffic!

Fast forward again, its August 2007. My wife and I decide to offer a program for domain name investors, Buildsout.com. The thought being we could put to use our experience developing websites and we could offer something all domainers are looking for; a set of options which best fits there needs. Our options were; 1) A plan for domain name owners in which we build out the initial site and hand it off to them. 2) A second plan where we manage domains with greater than 3,000 unique visitors and share revenue with the domain owner. 3) A flex plan in which traffic is not a factor until we grow the site - we take a larger percentage up front as we expect revenue to be low and as it grows we will decrease our share.

As you can imagine, the flex plan quickly became popular. Why not hand off a subpar domain name (no traffic, less than great keywords) to someone who is going to build a site for free, build traffic, and share revenue on a decreasing basis as traffic grows? No brainer, right? Right.

Well, we have learned there is low value, low return for plans like these. A number of sites we have developed, and developed well I might add, have done little. We have SEO'd the hell out of these domains. We created great content for these sites. We poured a good amount of time and resources into these sites and our return does not look good. Dont get me wrong, creating these spaces for domain owners has been a great experience and we have learned how to streamline our process. But with returns being close to non-existent we began to wonder why we wouldnt just do this for our own portfolio of sub-par domains. We have more than a handful of domains which are parked and we are sharing revenue with the parking company - more like they are sharing with us!

It just makes more sense to develop your own names, unless someone comes along with a very high traffic domain which will pay off immediately.

Considering our learning we have decided to do the following: 1) All current clients of our flex plan will have the opportunity to use their own advertising code on their website. 2) They also can continue to host with us for free. 3) Clients can continue to benefit from the sites we built for them if they choose to move to a new host but keep our link in the footer. 4) If clients choose to use their advertising code, we will immediately square up with the amount of revenue their site has generated to date.

We will still be offering our Builds-Out and Bail plan. Anyhow, today the domain industry was dealt a serious blow when Lufthansa (the airlines) was awarded the domain; LH.com through a UDRP decision. It appears the respondent (Future Media Architects) has already filed suit in New York, a pre-emptive call likely based upon experience...

We cannot begin to explain how big of a blow this is to domain name investors. A decision like this will offer fodder to big corporations who don't want to spend big bucks to steal domains from investors who might be intimidated. Furthermore, this will lead to a larger number of "reverse cybersquatting" cases, in which these companies will claim trademark rights, however vague the case may be, because the UDRP standard is favorable to weak cases offered by larger corporations. In essence reverse domain hi-jacking is becoming the norm.

Because of this, we will be focusing on building out a new site under our domains; reversecybersquatter.com and reversecybersquatters.com - we might even point reversehijackers.com to the site. We will be showcasing UDRP cases in which we feel the complainant was attempting to or succeeded in reverse domain hi-jacking. We will dig deep and add as many cases as we can find in the UDRP database - we will also need help from you to locate these cases. Additionally, we will be updating the site as new decisions are handed down.

No timeline on the site, but we will update you as progress is made.

Please scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='content'/>

Content Building: How to Develop Quality Content for Your Site Visitors.

I suspect you could ask ten different content builders what the best way to generate quality content for your website is and you would get ten different answers, or at least 10x variations of similar methodologies. The simple answer is; build content relevant to your site topic and optimize your content so visitors find what they are looking for. In order to get repeat visitors be sure your content is unique and will likely prompt someone to bookmark your page(s). The Holy Grail is having your visitors email your pages to others because your content tells a story or illuminates something worth sharing. This is no easy task, but with repeated failures and hard work the chances of building a quality content site is attainable by anyone.

Some tips for building quality content are:

1) Do your research: for every page you add to your site be sure to research the topic or sub-topics thoroughly. Use resources such as; search engines, online encyclopedias, and experts in the field.

2) Write it out: in your own words. It is perfectly ok to reformulate content from other sources, combine ideas, and create your own findings from other sources. However, if it is someone else’s idea (not general knowledge), you must credit the source. Try not copy and paste content into your pages; unless you plan on giving credit to the source.

3) Have it reviewed: That’s right, get someone you trust to read over and edit your work. Make sure it is someone who has an excellent grasp of the language you are writing in and can take the time to verify your content as unique and non-misleading.

4) Monitor your site: and gauge which pages are being perused the most. As traffic grows are your visitors finding certain pages more often than others? This is a good way to determine what content is good and what content is not so good. This will help you shed the crap while helping you build on good content pages your visitors frequent.

These are four general steps. There is much more you can do to improve the quality of your content and website(s). One the more difficult things you can do which will add credibility to your content is connect independent facts or data and in turn present these facts or data in a way which accurately represents each source. In other words, take two or more indisputable analyses and make a correlation or a new analogy based upon the results of the analyses. Confused yet? I am. This may be easier to explain with an example:

The domain Cessation.com is under development and as part of the content building process we found a number of research studies outlining statistics related to smoking; i.e. mortality rates, lung cancer deaths, and other negative effects from smoking. In each case the research highlighted specific results relative the content of the site in which we compiled the data. By reviewing each set of data we were able to answer a subset of questions by combining datasets and doing the simple math to get a unique piece of content generated by the Cessation.com content team (which is me). The two statements we make at the site are:

In 2007 cessation.com estimates smoking will lead to 139,539 lung cancer deaths in the United States.

In 2007, cessation.com estimates smoking will lead to 1,160,461 lung cancer deaths for the rest of the developed world.

This data was not directly offered by any of the sources we retrieved data from. Rather, we were able to combine datasets and answer specific questions through common relationships across all data.

This is just one example of creating unique content, through preexisting datasets. In the coming weeks I hope to delve a bit deeper into the four points noted above. Creating content can be time consuming and tedious. However, the rewards can lead to better traffic at your sites, better search engine rankings, and ultimately higher profits (If money is your game).

GoDaddy Bug or All Systems Normal?

Last week I offered up a couple domains from my portfolio which I feel may cross the line as far as trademark infringement. The idea of giving away these domains to anyone other than the potential complainant kind of defeats the purpose, but from my experience - which is limited - getting these "trademarked" domains to the TM holder can be a difficult process. More on this subject later.

I write now because I transferred a domain to someone this week at GoDaddy and received the standard automated "initiating transfer" and "cancellation" emails. Now, to be honest, I have not done a great deal of transferring using GoDaddy, so I wasn't sure what to expect in the way of email confirmations. However, a third email I received got me thinking - something I don't like to do often. Think that is.

It was a third email from GoDaddy explaining the recipient of the domain had accepted transfer of my domain. However, there were also a handful of other domains listed. These are domains I never registered or held in my portfolio. My immediate thought was GoDaddy accidentally tapped someone elses account and transferred these domains to the same guy I was transferring my one domain to.

Upon discussing this with my wife, we determined the recipient must have had other domain transferring occuring from other domain holders and this list was a master list of domains he was taking in all at once. In other words, the domain recipient was accepting a number of domains from a number of other domain holders.

Why in the hell does GoDaddy send out one master email to the group? - which is what I suspect is happening. Shouldn't they just send out one email to the players involved in the transaction? I now ask the question, is this standard procedure or is this a bug in GoDaddy's system? Has anyone else experienced this?

I will ask around and if the consensus is this is standard procedure, I wont contact GoDaddy for the sake of letting them spend time optimizing what they currently have in place.

Profiled at Domain Name Wire.

Thank you Andrew, that was cool. Now I shall return to the shadows....

"A profile of a virtual (and real world) real estate investor.

In an industry of self-promoters, Stuart Wood maintains a low profile.
“I prefer not to toot my own horn,” he claims. You may not have heard of him, nor his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin. But Wood is a big player in the domain name space.

Wood’s Salient Properties specializes in investing in both virtual real estate and physical real estate. He is perhaps best known for purchasing Wifi.com for $225,000 last year. Wood developed it into a directory of wifi hotspots. It’s now time for Wood to flip the site; but more on that later.

Salient Properties recently launched BuildsOut.com, a service that provides custom web sites on domains. This creates an opportunity for domain owners to get repeat and search engine traffic to their sites.

A number of domains qualify for BuildsOut. “Obviously we would love to have all high traffic premium .coms,” says Wood. “Inreality, BuildsOut.com has packaged programs for virtually any domain. We will develop any domain in which the domain name owner is passionate about.”
Long term, Wood hopes to manage 500-1000 domains in the BuildsOut program.

Wood came up with the idea for BuildsOut when he was developing Wifi.com. “The web developer I hired for the [wifi.com] job became my wife shortly thereafter and we work very well together as a team,” he says. Talk about a great working relationship.

“I also sat on a panel at the Domain Roundtable in August (my coming out from the shadows event) and based upon sharing my own experiences developing a domain I was amazed to find people approaching me about how to develop some of their own domains,” says Wood. “Obviously, as domainers we know development has really started to heat up over the past six months and there are only a few of us domainers who understand the industry and have the capacity to develop.”

That brings us back full circle to Wifi.com. BuildsOut is a big endeavor and taking all of Wood’s time. “We are a small development team and have to be selective in our focus,” says Wood. He has engaged a broker to sell the domain to the “logical buyer market.”

Good luck, Stuart. And welcome out of hiding."

Domain Development Plans at BuildsOut.com

BuildsOut came about because a couple of things fell into place for us. Firstly, we were already actively developing WiFi.com as a wireless Internet technology portal. Secondly, we had a handful of domain names we kept talking about developing but just had not got around to doing so. Lastly, after paneling a session at a domain conference it became evident most domain investors either; lack development skills or get caught up in acquiring and selling (think stock market here) with grandiose ideas of building each and every one of them out into thriving web businesses.

The simple fact is most businesses fail. Even the most experienced entrepreneurs with high degrees of business acumen can attest to this. Granted a premium generic category defining domain name can help bridge the gap between a hard-charging successful monetizer and the remote-wielding couch potato like myself. Regardless, failure is much more common than success and we fully understand the chances of turning our development platform into a thriving business are slim before we even got started.

To strengthen our odds in this world of failure we decided to not only leverage our Internet properties, but also take on other investor domain names into the program. So, as we move forward from this point we will be creating rich content spaces relative to the domain name topic and over time building an "exurb" which will act as a traffic conduit offering a wide-range of products, goods, and services available through our interactive BuildsOut Virtual Property Directory. The idea is; we will have a map mashup with a real property look and feel - I could go into more detail, but do not particularly feel like offering up the idea for the GP at this moment in time.

Anyhow, we are actively taking domains into the program. However, we are being very selective at this point because we are focusing most of our attention on finishing up our client portal.

Google Rants and Emergence of the "Long Tail" Search Query.

There has been much talk in the domain, search engine optimization (SEO), and search engine marketing (SEM) industries about the quality of ‘The Big Three’s’ (Google, MSN, and Yahoo!) search results over the past couple of years. As you know, there are many factors that go into the algorithms for search result queries. Until recently, Google has been considered to have an unbreakable algorithm, one which could not be manipulated by “Blackhat” SEO’ers (those who manipulate the algorithm, often under nefarious pretenses, for better search results). However, times have changed and many appear to have cracked the code…

Tell me this, have you noticed a decline in the quality of your search results at Google? I know I have. That’s because smart people have cornered the market on keywords, not only in easier-to-manipulate engines like MSN and Yahoo!, but Google as well. The emergence of parked, little to no value pages are also finding there way into top search results in Google. The predicament for Google is; they often supply the advertising platform to the majority of these pages. Google may claim it is best to provide rich content to your site visitors, but are they turning a blind eye if said pages lack originality but are bringing in copious amounts of money?

Not all is lost, however…
Google has begun hiring “Search Query Analysts” to manually review websites for quality standards related to typical keyword queries. They realize an exodus has begun – Google users moving to or supplementing with competitive search engines more frequently over the past two years. My feeling is Google understands the threat and plans on having specific sites of quality mixed in with the not-so-good high paying sites when a person types in a specific keyword.

Has Google backed itself into a corner? They claim to be working toward maintaining all the worlds' information in one place so everyone can easily access the information at any time (methinks Jimmy Wales has taken control of this space). At the same time, they profit from advertising not search queries. Does Google want it’s users to find the best information available on their research topic when they type in a keyword or do they want the sites with the highest traffic and highest paying keyword advertisements to resolve on top? So, we the searchers are penalized with poor search results because, as usual, capitalism takes over.

Ok, so now what? How do we deal with it?

This is no secret. There is a way around the declining quality of search results and I am sure you are aware. It is called the “long tail” search query. A long tail query usually takes a bit of thought on the searchers part. Opposed to a single or commonly paired keyword(s), a searcher uses multiple words or uses full sentences, like questions, to dig deeper into the search engine database.

For example, traditionally I may have typed “web developers” if I was seeking out a company to help me build an eCommerce or full-blown website. In this case, I did and the database returned a number of results on the first page; one of which looks to be a no-brainer to review. I clicked on the second result, which happens to be webdeveloper.com – this must be the place, right? It appears to be a well-established site with information about web development. However, I quickly realize two things as I start to peruse the site. Firstly, there is a huge banner ad on the right-hand side of the page provided by DoubleClick. Didn’t Google acquire DoubleClick this year? Furthermore, this site is owned and operated by Jupiter Media, which happens to have a considerable amount of traffic in their network of sites. Traffic = Cash Flow.

So, what if I go the long tail route for my query? I typed in “quality web development” and received a completely different set of results – based upon sites which contain all of the words I typed for my query. I added one extra keyword and altered another. I chose the second result (to be fair) and ended up at; smtusa.com – a well-designed site with an actual web development company operating within! There are no advertisements and most probably have less traffic than webdeveloper.com.

This is only one example, but I am sure you have experienced the difference.

This doesn’t mean generic keyword category defining domain names should be excluded from query results. I am simply pointing out a long tail query is more likely of offering results to pages the searcher is interested in finding out about. I feel the default result for any keyword search should be based solely on all possible interpretations of the searchers query. In other words, create an algorithm which anticipates what the searcher is thinking. If the keyword(s) has 10 different possible interpretations, then present the 10 best sites which represent all possible interpretations. To my knowledge this has never been implemented into a search algorithm. Until it is considered, the long tail search query is your best bet for finding quality sites which match what you are looking for in search results.

Stuart.

Salient Properties & BuildsOut.com

Salient Properties & BuildsOut.com are pleased to announce the BuildsOut BETA domain name development house is up and running.
